This week the Knesset will vote on a shocking draft bill, under which refugees who have fled the danger of death and torture in their home country will be sent to prison for years, together with their small children - and only public pressure can stop ratification of this terrible law.
This draft bill is unconstitutional and contravenes international treaties signed by Israel as well as contravening Jewish and human moral values. Ratification of the law will send to prison refugees who even Deputy Foreign Minister, Danny Ayalon agrees that they are in mortal danger in their country. The law will even make citizens who give the refugees a cup of waterany other assistance liable for five years imprisonment. Last year, public pressure succeeded in removing the draft bill from the Government table. If enough of us raise our voices now against this inhumane legislation, we can do it again.
As Israelis we remember well those dark times in which similar laws determined the fate of our people - but the government seems to have forgotten. It takes exactly one minute: use the form on the right to send a message directly to members of the Knesset committee considering the law and the heads of the factions, calling on them to stop this cruel law now.
