The Coalition Against Racism Condemns the Policy of House Demolition

The Coalition Against Racism in Israel denounces the policy and practice of destroying houses, which rose to a new level this past week in Qalansawe and today in Umm al-Hiran, and the escalation and the exaggerated police violence, as a result of which two people wereed and many residents were injured, among them MK Ayman Odeh. There is no doubt that the current policy is wrong, seriously harms peoples’ right to a roof over their heads, and leads to serious damage to the delicate fabric of relations that exists between the Arab and Jewish communities.  Instead of solving the severe housing crisis that exists in the Arab settlements – to a large extent the result of a policy of discrimination on the part of many Israeli governments, according to the findings of the Or Commission – they are adding to the suffering of residents who have become lawbreakers against their will due to the lack of plans suitable to the needs of the Arab communities today or the lack of recognition of the unrecognized communities in the Negev.   This is the time for democratic forces and human rights defenders, Jewish and Arab, to make their clear, sensible voices heard against the continuation of the spread of hate and racism in Israel.
